  1. FACEOFF AGAINST ME262S

  3. By the later stages of the war, American
  4. fighter pilots were eager to prove 
  5. themselves, especially against the top 
  6. German aircraft, the Me 262s.  The German
  7. jet fighters were considered a top prize,
  8. but because of their great speed they
  9. proved a tough and elusive adversary.
  10. Generally an American pilot's best chance
  11. of bagging an Me 262 was in catching them
  12. taking off or landing.  Rarely, an American
  13. pilot could translate an altitude advantage
  14. such that he could bounce the 262 before
  15. it had a chance to escape.  Adolf Galland,
  16. commander of Jagdverband 44 and former
  17. head of the Luftwaffe's fighter arm, was
  18. shot down in his Me 262 by James Finnegan
  19. on April 26, 1945.  Finnegan used the
  20. great diving capability of his P-47 to
  21. bounce Galland from high altitude and shoot
  22. him down.

  26. While escorting a formation of B-17s, be
  27. on the look out for Me 262s.  Fly ahead
  28. of the B-17s, gaining altitude, and orbit
  29. over the Erfurt airfield.  A pair of
  30. Me 262s will be flying south toward the
  31. airfield.  Bounce them from a high altitude.
  32. Other Me 262s will be landing at this same
  33. airfield.  Beware of the FW 190s flying
  34. cover.
